Question: Was Wahshi bin Harb a Companion?

Answer: Yes, he accepted Islaam. And he was the one who killed Hamza ibn ‘Abdul Muttalib, the Prophet’s (صلى الله عليه وسلم) uncle. But he accepted Islaam after that. And he is the one who killed Musaylimah Al-Kadhaab (the Liar). It is narrated where he said: “I have killed the best of people and the worst of people.”

Before he accepted Islaam, he killed Hamza. Then when he became a Muslim, he was martyred in (the battle of) Al-Yamamah here [1] and he fought (in the battle). When Banu Haneefah apostated, he killed Musaylimah Al-Kadhaab, yes.

[1] Translator’s Note: The battle of Al-Yamamah took place in the now non-existent district of the same name, close to the city of Al-Kharj in modern day Saudi Arabia (about 80 kilometers from the capital Riyaadh). That is what the Shaykh meant when he said, “here”.
